Not fair that I contracted it this way not from sexual contact.

One night all four of us were having a couple of beers on our patio and we started talking about how nasty std's are. We talked about the various ones and how we had heard that herpes is particularly nasty. Of course we had never had the virus so we really had no idea what it was really like. Suddenly she jumps up calls us a bunch of A@*holes and runs into our roommates bedroom and starts crying. I tried to console her as did everyone else. She never told us why she reacted that way. We let it go. About two months later our roommate decided to move out and get his own place with her. It had been a long crowded two months. On more than one occasion I had found her in my bathroom/bedroom "borrowing" stuff. Clothes, lotion shampoo stuff like that. I told her it was fine just to ask before she borrowed. About 2 weeks before they moved I started to get this awful sharp pain in my groin area. I made an appointment with my dr because the area started to itch as well. A few days later 2 blisters broke out around my vagina and I thought at first it was an ingrown hair. I had my doctor look at it and she confirmed with a swab test that it was herpes. I cried for days. The sores were so painful when they broke open going to the bathroom was a nightmare. I finally told my boyfriend why I was crying and he just stood there in shock. I really thought he had cheated on me I just couldn't place when and well he thought I cheated on him. I spent days online trying to figure out another way I could have got it. This put a huge strain on our relationship and we were about to break up until the following events occurred. That evening they came in the door and announced that she was 2 months pregnant. We were happy but felt for our friend who clearly was not ready for this. She asked me to go with her to the doctor for her first ob appointment. I did and the information I found out there floored me. Her doctor was afraid to examine her because she had a full blown herpes episode. He also started talking to her about the complications that can arise from having herpes particularly during the birth. He stated to be safe she would have to have a c-section. I tried to fight back tears as I realized that I had found the source of my infection. I just couldn't figure out how I had received it. I went through so many scenarios and my irrational, at the time, brain decided that my boyfriend had been sleeping with her too. She had flirted with him on many occasions and she was the only girl that he was ever alone with. I didn't speak to her the whole hour drive home. ( she liked her old dr) That evening as the tension rose I asked everyone to sit down and asked her and my boyfriend in front of my roommate it they had been cheating. They both protested and I announced that I knew she had herpes and that I was recently diagnosed. My roommate just about fell off his chair and after arguing amongst ourselves for a bit she finally yelled that it was her fault. On more than one occasion she had borrowed my razor, my bath towels and my toothbrush. EWWW! She had always used one of my new razor heads and didn't think I would notice. However she would put them back in the storage part of my razor holder so I would have thought it was a fresh blade. I shave everywhere. I took the "new" blades the following day to my doctor and it was confirmed that 2 out of 4 of them had virus on them. I have a really wonderful doctor she did the testing for free. My roommates girlfriend was never again allowed in my home. My boyfriend and I eventually broke up because he felt I was dirty still even though I was a victim in this situation. He never contracted the virus. My roommate stayed with her for the sake of their new baby. He did ask her to have an abortion but that never happened. Up until the date of that big blow up he still had not contracted the virus. So that happened 4 years ago. I have been through about 6 cycles. I was taking valtrex but noticed that I would have a new outbreak every 2-3 months when I used it. It would lessen the duration but I was getting outbreaks more frequently. I just decided to try and strengthen my immune system instead and now only have about 1 outbreak a year. This has been a very debilitating disease for me. Its not fair that I caught it this way but there are always deceitful people out there. I just had to learn to protect myself a little better. Its very hard to have this disease as many people don't understand it. Lots of people make assumptions that are not true and it didn't help that out of spite she told everyone we knew I had the virus. I used to be one of those people that made assumptions but now I know that there e is always more to a story than you see or hear on the outside. |
